Neuralgia refersto sharp, stabbing, burning, or electric-shock-like pain that follows the path of a specific nerve. Unlike muscle or joint pain, neuralgic pain can be triggered by the lightest touch — even a gentle breeze on the skin — and can be extraordinarily intense. It often strikes suddenly, in short bursts, and can be completely debilitating. At Nexus Pain & Spine, Mumbai, we specialise in diagnosing and treating even the most challenging neuralgic conditions.
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Often called’thesuicide disease’ due to its extreme intensity, trigeminal neuralgia causes sudden, severe facial pain triggered by chewing, speaking, or touching the face. We have a separate dedicated page for this condition.
Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (Shingles Pain)
Following ashingles (herpeszoster) outbreak, some patients develop persistent burning nerve pain in the affected area — even after the rash has healed. This is post-herpetic neuralgia, and it requires specialised treatment.
Occipital Neuralgia
Sharp, shooting pain in the back of the head, scalp, and behind the eyes — caused by irritation of the occipital nerves at the base of the skull.
Intercostal Neuralgia
Painalongthe ribscaused by irritation or injury to the intercostal nerves. Can be associated with shingles, rib fractures, or thoracic surgery.
Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia
Severethroatandearpaintriggered by swallowing, talking, or coughing. Rare but extremely painful.
Pudendal Neuralgia
Chronic pelvic pain caused by compression of the pudendal nerve. Often misdiagnosed. Can cause pain while sitting, sexual dysfunction, and bladder issues.
Specialised Nerve Block Injections
Targeted injections near the affected nerve provide immediate pain relief. Particularly effective for occipital neuralgia, intercostal neuralgia, and post-herpetic neuralgia.
Pulsed Radiofrequency (PRF)
A non-destructive neuromodulation technique that ‘resets’ overactive nerve signals without damaging the nerve. Effective for multiple types of neuralgia.
Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)
For chronic, refractory neuralgic pain, SCS delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, overriding the pain signals. Can provide 50–70% pain reduction in carefully selected patients.
Medications
Anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, gabapentin, pregabalin) and tricyclic antidepressants are the cornerstone of medical management for most neuralgias. We optimise dosing for effectiveness and side-effect minimisation.
Topical Treatments
Lidocaine patches and capsaicin cream are effective for localised neuralgic pain, particularly post-herpetic neuralgia.
