What Are Muscle Spasms?

A musclespasmis an involuntary, sudden contraction of one or more muscles that can cause sharp pain and temporary inability to use the affected muscle. While occasional muscle cramps are harmless, chronic or recurring muscle spasms — especially in the back, neck, or legs — can signal an underlying problem that needs medical attention. At Nexus Pain & Spine, Mumbai, we treat the root cause, not just the symptom.

Common Causes of Muscle Spasms

  • Dehydrationand electrolyte imbalances(lowpotassium, calcium, magnesium)
  • Overuse, fatigue, or straining of a muscle
  • Poor posture — especially prolonged sitting or hunching over screens
  • Nerve compression from a herniated disc or spinal stenosis
  • Muscle trigger points — tight, hyperirritatable bands in muscle tissue
  • Stress and anxiety causing chronic muscle tension
  • Underlying conditions such as fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome
  • Side effects of certain medications or nutritional deficiencies

Symptoms

  • Sudden, sharp muscle tightening lasting seconds to minutes
  • Visible muscle twitching or hardening
  • Localised pain that may radiate to surrounding areas
  • Restricted movement during and after the spasm
  • Restricted movement during and after the spasm

Treatment Options at Nexus

Trigger Point Injections
A small injection of local anaesthetic (with or without corticosteroid) directly into the trigger point — the tight knot in the muscle — instantly relaxes it and breaks the pain cycle. Highly effective for myofascial pain and chronic spasm patterns.

Dry Needling
Thin needles inserted into trigger points stimulate muscle relaxation and increase blood flow, promoting healing. Similar to acupuncture but focused on specific muscle pathology.

Botulinum Toxin Injections
For stubborn, chronic muscle spasms that don’t overactive muscles for 3–6 months.

Physiotherapy
Stretching, strengthening, and postural correction exercises address the mechanical causes of muscle spasms. Our physiotherapists also use TENS, ultrasound therapy, and manual techniques for immediate relief.

Oral Medications
Muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, and where appropriate, nerve pain medications help manage acute and chronic muscle spasm pain.

If you are experiencing recurring muscle spasms that are affecting your daily life, don’t wait. Our team at Nexus Pain & Spine, Mumbai, can identify the cause and create an effective, personalised treatment plan for you.
