Spondylitis refersto inflammation of the spinal vertebrae. There are several types, each with distinct causes and treatment approaches. At Nexus Pain & Spine, Mumbai, we see and manage all forms of spondylitis — from the most common cervical and lumbar variants to the more complex autoimmune condition, ankylosing spondylitis.
Cervical Spondylitis
Degenerativechanges in the cervical (neck) spine — wear and tear of the discs, joints, and bones. Extremely common in adults over 40, especially those with desk jobs or prolonged screen time.
Lumbar Spondylitis
Similar degenerative changes in the lumbar (lower back) spine. Often called ‘lumbar spondylosis, this leads to chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and sometimes sciatica.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
Anautoimmuneinflammatorycondition primarily affecting the sacroiliac joints and spine. Unlike degenerative spondylitis, AS typically begins in young adults and causes progressive stiffness that is worse in the morning and improves with movement. If untreated, it can lead to spinal fusion.
Diagnosisinvolves clinical history, physical examination, blood tests (HLA-B27 for ankylosing spondylitis), and imaging (X-ray, MRI). Early diagnosis of AS is crucial to prevent irreversible damage.
